The Disinfection Guide – How to Properly Disinfect Your Workspace

Germs and bacteria are something that can go overlooked in a busy workspace. With foot traffic and dirt coming into the building, making sure your building is clean and disinfected can be hard. It is important to regularly clean and disinfect your building in order to control the buildup of germs and viruses found on the surfaces. However, it is not just important to disinfect the areas where customers and employees work and visit but also any equipment or areas that may often go overlooked.

What is Disinfecting?

The act of destroying harmful microorganisms,  disinfecting will eliminate the germs, viruses, and bacteria that have made a home in your workspace. However, before you can see the success in the disinfection process, your work area and surfaces must first be cleaned thoroughly. Without proper regular cleaning, dirt and soil will interfere with disinfectants and their working process. Making sure your building is disinfected will keep germs and viruses from making your building uncomfortable.

Know What Areas Need Disinfecting

Knowing where the areas need the most disinfection done will ensure that your workplace environment is safe and clean. After a thorough cleaning has been done, disinfecting the most commonly used areas will help prevent any germ or bacteria buildup. There should also be a focus put on surfaces and objects touched every day by customers and employees. The areas that may be included in the disinfection process are:

  • reception areas
  • meeting and conference rooms
  • waiting rooms
  • exam rooms
  • lunch and staff rooms
  • bathrooms
  • doorways
  • offices
  • hallways

Once your commonly used areas are clean, you may also want to consider some of the most touched places and areas by your customers and employees and have these areas cleaned and disinfected as well. The very common things that may be normally touched and would need a thorough cleaning and disinfecting in your building are:

  • handrails
  • door knobs
  • phones
  • light switches
  • desktops
  • computer keyboards
  • computer “mice”
  • table tops
  • armrests on chairs, top, and bottom
  • countertops
  • bathroom stall latches
  • toilet paper dispensers
  • toilet flush handles
  • liquid soap dispensers
  • hot air hand dryers
  • paper towel dispensers

After these most touched and used areas are cleaned and disinfected, you may also want to consider cleaning and disinfecting the storage rooms and closets in your facility.

How Can You Disinfect the Germs Away?

Once your workspace becomes unsightly with dirt, it is easy for germs and bacteria to build up, making your workspace look and feel dirty. However, by cleaning and disinfecting those most touched and used areas, you are eliminating the risk of germs and bacteria becoming a big nuisance. So, to make sure the bacteria and germs that have built up over time are properly cleaned, a thorough cleaning and disinfecting process should be followed.

To properly disinfect your office, the following process should be done.

  1. Sweep the floors and clean any crumbs or dirt with a wet cloth or mop.
  2. Wipe down all surfaces with a disinfectant. Pay special attention to doorknobs, light switches, computer keyboards, and telephones.
  3. Vacuum the carpets and furniture.
  4. Dust all surfaces, including blinds and ceiling fans.
